It can be hard to define what a dive bar is. Is it a dimly lit room with alcohol in it? Is it a place with cheap, stiff drinks? Is it a place where strangers go to imbibe and chat together? Or is it a place to go and sulk alone for a while?
Truth is, it can be one of these, some of these, or all of these. Luckily, the Drawing Room in Los Feliz is a beacon among trendier bars where all your divey questions and desires will be answered and fulfilled.
Many consider it the quintessential dive. For over 35 years, seven days a week, and 365 days a year, the Drawing Room has opened it’s doors promptly at 6:00 am. Even in the early hours of the morning, the bar has solid business from the sleepless of the neighborhood, the graveyard shift workers, and film crews all looking to enjoy a strong beverage. The cash-only prices keep the regulars coming, and new patrons flowing in regularly. Drinks start at $3.50 and average out to around $5.00.
It’s easy to sit and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, although the actual vibe of the place is hard to distinguish. The few red lanterns throughout the place don’t exactly go with the comfy, cracked leather booths, and the large painted dragon on the back wall seems to come out of nowhere. The dartboard and jukebox seem somewhat out of place as well (although the selection of music is top notch.) And in true dive fashion, the lights are dimmed so low that you’d be lucky to see where the dartboard you’re aiming at is.
Generally the crowd tends to be older gentlemen who’ve been there countless times, or younger, artistic types that are trying to soak up the atmosphere that bred the Bukowski’s of the world. So if you’re not into the the swankier bars in the neighborhood, and want to enjoy a heavily-poured bourbon on the rocks, make your way down to the Drawing Room and enjoy.
The Drawing Room is located at 1800 Hillhurst Ave in Los Feliz and is open everyday from 6:00am – 2:00am
