Echo Park Rising

A Music Festival that Caters to LA’s Insatiable Hunger for Local Talent

Throngs of music lovers and, of course, fashionable hipsters gathered in the streets of Echo Park to experience the annual Echo Park Rising festival. What started as a mere pop-up shop seven years ago has now grown into a full blown out four-day festival, salvaging what’s left of the popular Sunset Junction Street Fair.

Despite growing popularity of for-profit festivals in Los Angeles such as FYF, Camp Flog Gnaw, and several others; Echo Park Rising has successfully built a reputation as one of LA’s best festivals. With its 400+ live sets and extensive clout attracting the most eclectic personalities in Los Angeles, it’s difficult to deny that it’s a crowd favorite amongst native and transplant Angelenos alike.

What especially distinguishes this event from the rest, aside from being free (How can anyone argue with that?), is the obvious presence of community and focus on local, up-and-coming talent. The search for new music can get a little overwhelming in a large city brimming with talent at every corner. Echo Park Rising invites festival goers to enjoy all the neighborhood has to offer, including a plethora of eateries and cafes while hopping from set to set. In addition, it gives Los Angeles a break from being notoriously pretentious by giving lesser known artists a platform to present their music to the public.

Los Angeles native and self-proclaimed music enthusiast. I let my impatience and 20 something naiveness inspire my irrational decisions. Sometimes I allow myself to indulge in a good read via paperback, so I can feed my denial about the dying paper industry. I’m also quite notorious for picking up conversations with strangers, and grilling them about their preferences in music. In all honesty, I’m just really fascinated by people and how they incorporate music in their lives.
